STEM in the Field
Earth science and glaciology: At Aoraki/Mount Cook and in the Matukituki Valley, students look at how glaciers carve valleys, feed lakes and rivers, and respond to a changing climate.
Ecology and conservation biology: From alpine plants to coastal dunes and estuaries, students study how ecosystems work, how introduced species put pressure on native biodiversity and how protected areas are managed.
Environmental monitoring and data: Service projects may include waterway monitoring, biodiversity observations and coastal plastics surveys. Students gather real field data and help evaluate the results of their work.
Applied science and technology: On a high-country station, students look at pasture and soil management, irrigation and water allocation, and the agricultural technology behind modern farming.
Systems thinking: Students connect the whole journey from mountains to sea, tracing how water, land use, climate and communities interact across one region.

Meaningful Learning Outcomes
At Unearthed Education, our programmes help students discover who they are, how they engage with the world and the impact they can have within it. On this expedition, students:
- Learn how to act responsibly toward a more sustainable future, locally and globally
- Build practical self-care strategies for physical health, mental wellbeing and long-term resilience
- Experience diverse cultures and lived experiences, and see their place in a shared global community
- Step beyond their comfort zones and build initiative, confidence, adaptability and grit
- Think critically about the social, environmental and cultural issues that shape our world
- Strengthen their sense of identity, personal values and purpose
Why take STEM Outside the Classroom
Science Makes Sense When Students Can Touch It
A textbook can explain adaptation. Standing on a goregous New Zealand lakeshore, comparing native birds with your own field notes, makes it unforgettable. Unearthed STEM expeditions give students the chance to observe, measure, test and question in the places where the science actually happens.
We build each program around your learning objectives, so every day in the field connects back to what students study at school. The result is deeper understanding, stronger engagement and the kind of curiosity that carries into senior subjects and university pathways.

Three value cards:
Real data, real places. Students practise fieldwork methods such as sampling, surveying and recording, then analyse what they find.
Built around your curriculum. Our team designs the itinerary with you so each activity maps to your subject goals.
Science with a purpose. Programs connect STEM to conservation, sustainability and local communities, showing students why their learning matters.
Curriculum and Learning Outcomes
Designed With Teachers, Mapped to Your Curriculum
Every STEM program starts with your goals. Tell us the subjects, year levels and assessment requirements, and we build the itinerary, pre-trip resources and field activities to match. Programs suit Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth and Environmental Science, Marine Science, Geography and Design and Technology.
Personalised Programming
Develop a tailored program that reflects your educational focus and goals. Meticulously designed to align with high school curriculum objectives, our itineraries ensure a relevant and meaningful experience for students.
By the End of the Expedition, Students Will Be Able to:
- Plan and carry out field investigations using recognised scientific methods.
- Collect, record and analyse real-world data, then present their findings.
- Explain how STEM disciplines connect to conservation, sustainability and community challenges.
- Work as a team in unfamiliar environments, building resilience, leadership and problem-solving skills.
How We Build Your Program
- Program Vision: we learn your objectives, group size and timing.
- Program Design: we draft a curriculum-aligned itinerary and proposal.
- Preparation and Launch: we support briefings for students, parents and staff.
- The Expedition Experience: our team delivers the program in the field.
Safety and Why UNEARTHED
Trusted by Schools for 25+ Years
Taking students overseas is a big responsibility. Unearthed has led more than 8,500 students on expeditions with zero serious harm incidents, and partners with schools across New Zealand and Australia, including Mount Aspiring College, Mount Maunganui College and Kambala.
- Experienced field teams who know each destination and its risks.
- End-to-end planning covering logistics, accommodation, transport and in-country support.

FAQ
What does STEM stand for? STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. A STEM school trip gives students hands-on experience applying these subjects in real-world settings.
Can you align a trip with our curriculum? Yes. Every program is custom designed around your subject areas, year levels and learning objectives.
Which year levels are STEM expeditions suited to? Our programs are designed for high school and university groups. We adapt the scientific depth to suit your students.
Can a STEM trip include service learning or leadership? Yes. Many schools combine fieldwork with conservation projects, community service or leadership development.
How do we get started? Request a program proposal and our team will work with you on a custom itinerary.
